Every Nigerian business trying to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria eventually hits the same wall. You find the right supplier, agree a price, and then discover that actually paying them is its own separate project.

This guide breaks down the four platforms Nigerian importers run into most often when they try to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria: Alipay, WeChat Pay, 1688, and Made-in-China.com. We’ll cover what each one actually is, how Nigerians can realistically use it, and where the real friction sits when you try to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria.

Why It’s Hard to Pay Chinese Suppliers From Nigeria

Anyone trying to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria runs into the same root issue: China’s domestic payment system was not built with foreign buyers in mind. Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate everyday commerce inside China, but most of that infrastructure assumes a Chinese bank account and a Chinese ID.

Nigerian naira cards get declined at checkout more often than most buyers expect, a problem we cover in our guide to why naira cards fail internationally. Bank wires clear slowly and carry fees that only become clear after the money has already left your account.

None of this means it’s impossible to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria. It means the path is not always the obvious one, and picking the wrong platform for your situation can cost you time, money, or both.

The Four Platforms Nigerian Importers Run Into

Alipay and WeChat Pay are payment apps, the digital wallets that power daily spending across China. 1688 and Made-in-China.com are marketplaces, the actual places where you find and order from suppliers.

Understanding this distinction matters. You don’t choose between Alipay and 1688 the way you’d choose between two competing options. A marketplace helps you find your supplier, and a payment method, sometimes Alipay, sometimes something else entirely, actually settles the invoice.

Alipay: What It Is and How Nigerians Actually Use It

Alipay is China’s largest digital wallet, operated by Ant Group, an affiliate of Alibaba. It handles a huge share of everyday payments inside China, from splitting a restaurant bill to paying a factory invoice.

Since 2023, Alipay has allowed international users to bind foreign Visa, Mastercard, and other cards directly to the app. This update was aimed mainly at travelers spending money while physically in China, not at buyers wiring payment to a supplier from abroad.

Registering with an overseas phone number and passport lets a Nigerian user link a foreign card for spending. Using a Chinese phone number instead defaults the account to domestic verification, which requires Chinese identification you likely don’t have.

For anyone trying to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria specifically through Alipay, many sellers still expect transfers funded through a Chinese bank account. A Nigerian buyer without one typically needs a separate cross-border solution layered on top of Alipay, which we cover further down.

Wechat Pay: What It Is and How Nigerians Actually Use It

WeChat Pay lives inside WeChat, the messaging app that doubles as China’s default communication tool for business. Many Chinese suppliers prefer negotiating and confirming orders over WeChat chat, then settling payment in the same app.

Like Alipay, WeChat Pay opened up to foreign card binding in 2023, letting international users attach a Visa or Mastercard for spending inside China. The same traveler-first design applies here too.

WeChat Pay already supports over 300 Chinese banks domestically, alongside limited functionality for holders of certain foreign cards. Full features, including paying a supplier directly by transfer, still lean heavily on a Chinese-linked account.

For a Nigerian buyer, WeChat Pay tends to work best as a communication and confirmation channel with a supplier. The actual payment usually gets routed through a separate method built for cross-border settlement.

1688: What It Is and How Nigerians Actually Use It

1688.com is Alibaba’s domestic wholesale marketplace, built for Chinese buyers sourcing from Chinese factories. It carries over ten million suppliers across more than 1,700 categories, often at prices four to fifteen percent below Alibaba.com, sometimes far lower.

The catch is that 1688 was never designed for international buyers. The interface is almost entirely in Chinese, and the platform does not natively accept standard international payment methods at checkout.

Nigerian buyers who want to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria through 1688 can still register and browse the platform directly. Paying is the real obstacle.

Most sellers only accept settlement through Alipay linked to a Chinese bank account. The alternative is 1688’s official cross-border option, a program sometimes called World Pay, run in partnership with Alipay and a licensed payment provider.

That cross-border option lets foreign buyers fund a balance and settle in offshore CNH without opening a Chinese bank account. It requires its own registration and verification steps, separate from a basic 1688 account.

A sourcing agent is the other common route into 1688. The agent holds the local payment relationship and pays the supplier directly. You pay the agent instead, through a method that’s easier to access from Nigeria, usually for a commission of one to three percent on top of the product cost.

Made-In-China.com: What It Is and How Nigerians Actually Use It

Made-in-China.com has operated since 1998 and is publicly listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Unlike 1688, it was built specifically for cross-border trade, connecting international buyers with Chinese suppliers from the start.

The platform reports millions of suppliers and a buyer base spread across regions including a meaningful share from Africa. That international orientation shows up in how the platform is structured, with multilingual support and settlement options designed for buyers outside China.

Made-in-China.com offers a range of settlement options along with secure payment escrow on many listings, holding funds until an order is confirmed. This structure is closer to what Nigerian buyers already expect from international B2B trade than 1688’s domestic-first setup.

Bank wire transfer remains the most commonly used method for larger orders on Made-in-China.com, the same way it does across most international supplier relationships. Smaller sample orders sometimes support card payment directly.

Alipay vs Wechat vs 1688 vs Made-In-China: Side By Side

Alipay and WeChat Pay are payment tools, useful once you already have a supplier and a confirmed order. Both now accept foreign cards for spending in China, but neither was built for a Nigerian buyer wiring a supplier payment from Lagos.

1688 offers the deepest, cheapest supplier base. But it demands the most workaround to actually pay. That means an Alipay account tied to a Chinese bank, the official cross-border solution, or an agent standing between you and the factory.

Made-in-China.com trades some of 1688’s rock-bottom pricing for a platform genuinely built around international buyers, with settlement options and escrow that don’t require a Chinese bank account at all.

For a Nigerian importer choosing where to even start sourcing, that difference in international readiness often matters more than a small difference in unit price.

Why Most Nigerian Buyers Need a Workaround to Pay Chinese Suppliers From Nigeria

The common thread across all four platforms, for anyone trying to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria, is simple. China’s payment infrastructure assumes a domestic user, and a Nigerian buyer is, by definition, not one.

This isn’t unique to China. Cross-border commerce almost always requires some kind of bridge between two financial systems, the same bridge Wiwa was built to provide.

The practical question for a Nigerian importer isn’t whether a workaround is needed. It’s which workaround costs the least time, the least money, and carries the least risk for your specific order size.

How to Actually Fund Your Payment Without a Chinese Bank Account

Most Nigerian buyers looking to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria rely on one of three approaches. There’s a sourcing agent who pays locally on your behalf. A dedicated cross-border payment provider built for platforms like 1688 is another, alongside a direct international wire transfer straight to the supplier’s bank.

Each option trades cost against convenience differently. An agent adds a commission but removes almost all of the friction. A direct wire keeps costs lower but exposes you to the full risk of an irreversible transfer if anything goes wrong.

Whichever route you choose, the naira side of the equation still matters just as much as the China side. You need naira converted into usable dollars or yuan at a rate you can actually verify. We cover this problem in detail in our guide to the true cost of sending naira to China.

The Real Cost to Pay Chinese Suppliers From Nigeria

Every method to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria carries a cost beyond the sticker price of the goods. A sourcing agent’s commission is visible upfront.

That kind of transparency is what every fee deserves, a principle covered in our breakdown of the official versus black market yuan to naira rate. A wire transfer’s fees, typically fifteen to forty dollars per transaction, are usually disclosed too.

The cost that catches most buyers off guard is the exchange rate margin. That’s the gap between the real market rate and whatever rate your bank, agent, or payment provider actually applies. That margin is often larger than every other fee combined.

We’ve broken this down in detail in our five-year yuan to naira exchange rate history, which shows just how much that gap has moved over time. Checking your rate against the public mid market benchmark, every single time, is the one habit that protects your margin regardless of which platform you use.

How Alibaba.com Fits Into This Picture

Alibaba.com deserves a mention alongside these four, since Nigerian buyers often confuse it with 1688 given they share a parent company. The two are built for different audiences entirely.

Alibaba.com was designed from the start for international buyers, supporting major payment methods including credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal directly at checkout. Its Trade Assurance program holds your payment in escrow until you confirm the order matches what was promised. You get refunded if a supplier misses agreed shipping dates or quality terms.

This makes Alibaba.com a genuinely easier starting point than 1688 for a Nigerian buyer new to sourcing from China. That said, 1688 often has lower prices on the exact same or similar products. Many experienced importers use Alibaba.com to identify a supplier, then move to 1688 once the relationship is established and pricing can be negotiated more aggressively.

Why Platform Choice Isn’t the Only Decision That Matters

Picking between Alipay, WeChat Pay, 1688, and Made-in-China.com is only half of the real decision Nigerian buyers face. The other half, just as important, is how you fund whichever platform you choose in the first place.

A buyer who picks the cheapest platform still has a problem if the funding fails. A naira card that keeps getting declined, or a bank transfer that takes a week to clear, defeats the point. The platform and the funding method both need to work together, not just one of them.

This is why we’ve spent as much of this guide on the funding side as the platform side. Choosing well between Alipay, WeChat, 1688, and Made-in-China matters, but it only pays off if the naira behind that choice moves cleanly too.

What a Typical First Order Looks Like in Practice

A first-time Nigerian buyer sourcing electronics accessories, for example, might start on Alibaba.com or Made-in-China.com, searching for a supplier with strong reviews and a Trade Assurance or escrow badge. After a few messages confirming specifications and minimum order quantity, a sample gets ordered and paid for directly through the platform’s supported card checkout.

Once the sample confirms quality, a larger bulk order follows, often at a better price the supplier only offers for volume. At this stage, some buyers move the relationship to WeChat for faster back-and-forth communication, while keeping the actual payment on the original platform for the escrow protection.

A buyer who later discovers the same supplier, or a similar one, listed more cheaply on 1688 might then act on it. They set up a cross-border payment solution or engage an agent for future orders, once the relationship and trust are already established. This staged approach, starting safer and cheaper as trust builds, is common among experienced Nigerian importers.

How to Read and Verify a Chinese Supplier Invoice

A supplier invoice priced in yuan, RMB, or CNY is describing the same currency, just under different labels. We cover this distinction fully in our RMB vs Yuan vs CNY guide. Confusing these labels for different currencies is a common, avoidable mistake.

Before paying anything, confirm the supplier’s registered business name matches the bank account or Alipay account receiving your payment. You can verify your own transfer details anytime through the Wiwa app. A mismatch is one of the clearest warning signs in cross-border trade.

Keep every invoice, chat confirmation, and payment receipt in writing. Screenshots of a WeChat negotiation become your record if a dispute ever comes up later.

Avoiding Scams when You Pay Chinese Suppliers From Nigeria

Wire transfers are irreversible once sent, which is exactly why they’re a favorite target for fraud. A convincing fake invoice with slightly altered bank details can redirect real money to a stranger’s account.

Platforms with built-in escrow, like Made-in-China.com’s secure payment options or Alibaba’s Trade Assurance, hold your payment until you confirm the order matches what was promised. This protection doesn’t exist on a plain bank wire arranged directly with a supplier.

Sourcing agents reduce this specific risk. A reputable agent has an existing relationship with the factory and a reputation to protect, similar to the standard we hold ourselves to and describe on our homepage. That protection comes at the cost of the agent’s commission, which is a fair trade for many first-time buyers.

Why Timing Your Payment Matters Too

The naira to yuan rate moves throughout the day, sometimes meaningfully within a single week, a pattern we track closely in our five-year yuan to naira exchange rate history. A buyer who pays the moment an invoice arrives, without checking the current rate, can end up paying more than necessary purely from bad timing.

This matters more for recurring supplier payments than for a single order. A business paying the same supplier every month absorbs any timing inefficiency repeatedly, not just once. That’s why checking the rate before every single payment is worth the small extra effort.

What to Ask a Supplier Before You Pay Chinese Suppliers From Nigeria

A short list of questions, asked before any money moves, prevents most of the common problems Nigerian buyers run into. Which platform or method does the supplier actually prefer for payment, and have they worked with international buyers from Africa before.

Is a deposit standard for this order size, and what percentage is typical for the product category. Does the supplier’s registered business name match exactly what appears on the payment details they’ve shared, since even a small mismatch is worth pausing over.

Asking these questions upfront, in writing, costs a few minutes and often reveals whether a supplier is genuinely set up for international buyers or improvising as they go.

Choosing the Right Platform for Your Order Size

A small, occasional order favors simplicity over squeezing out the lowest possible unit price. Made-in-China.com or a sourcing agent handling 1688 on your behalf both keep the process manageable for a buyer still learning the ropes.

A large, recurring order, the kind a growing SME or wholesaler places every month, makes 1688’s lower pricing worth the extra setup effort. The cross-border payment solution becomes a one-time cost of admission rather than a recurring headache.

Whichever platform you land on, the naira funding it and the rate you get converting it matter just as much as the platform itself. A cheap supplier on 1688 stops being cheap if your funding method quietly adds a wide margin on every transfer.

How Wiwa Makes It Easier to Pay Chinese Suppliers From Nigeria

We built Wiwa to solve the funding side of this exact problem: helping Nigerian businesses pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria without the usual friction. A Nigerian SME paying a 1688 agent, a Made-in-China.com supplier, or settling an Alipay-linked invoice needs one thing above all. Naira converted into usable dollars quickly and transparently, without a card getting declined mid-transaction.

With Wiwa, you can fund a virtual USD card directly from naira at a rate you can check before you commit. Then use that card to pay a sourcing agent, a cross-border payment provider, or any supplier that accepts international cards. You can download the Wiwa app and set one up in minutes.

Every transaction is logged inside the app in real time. That gives you a clean record the moment funds move, useful if a dispute over a supplier payment ever comes up later. We built this for businesses making bulk and recurring supplier payments first, since that recurring friction is exactly what pushed us to build Wiwa in the first place.

For contractors, wholesalers, and dropshippers paying suppliers on a regular schedule, that consistency compounds. This is the exact audience covered in our guide to the naira to yuan exchange rate for business.

The same transparent rate on your fifth payment as your first is not a small thing when a hidden margin repeats every single month. You can see the current rate any time on the Wiwa homepage.

Record Keeping for Businesses That Pay Chinese Suppliers From Nigeria Regularly

A business paying Chinese suppliers monthly needs more than a folder of screenshots. Every payment should be logged with the date, the platform used, the rate applied, and the total naira spent. This record supports both accurate product pricing and proper tax bookkeeping.

Foreign currency transactions typically need to be reported at their naira value on the transaction date for accounting purposes. A platform that generates this record automatically, rather than requiring you to reconstruct it later from memory, saves real time at tax season.

This kind of documentation also strengthens your position if a dispute ever arises with a supplier or a payment provider. A complete, timestamped record is far more persuasive than a recollection of what you believe happened.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paying Chinese Suppliers From Nigeria

Can I pay a Chinese supplier directly from a Nigerian bank account?

Sometimes, through an international wire transfer, though fees and delays are common and the transfer is irreversible once sent. Most Nigerian buyers find a dedicated cross-border payment method faster and more predictable.

Do I need a Chinese bank account to use Alipay or WeChat Pay?

Not for basic foreign card binding aimed at travelers, but full supplier payment functionality still generally expects a Chinese-linked account. This is exactly the gap cross-border payment solutions exist to fill.

Is 1688 cheaper than Made-in-China.com?

Often yes, sometimes significantly, since 1688 serves the domestic Chinese market directly. That savings has to be weighed against the extra payment setup effort 1688 requires compared to a platform built for international buyers.

More Questions On Safety and Costs

Is it safe to wire money directly to a Chinese supplier?

It can be, with a known, verified supplier, but a wire transfer carries no built-in protection if something goes wrong. Escrow-backed platforms or a reputable sourcing agent reduce that risk considerably.

Why did my Nigerian card get declined on a Chinese platform?

Many Chinese platforms and payment apps still don’t accept Nigerian-issued cards directly, even where foreign card support exists for other countries. A funded virtual USD card is a common, reliable workaround.

What’s the biggest hidden cost when paying Chinese suppliers from Nigeria?

The exchange rate margin, the gap between the real market rate and the rate your payment method actually applies. It’s usually larger than any visible fee and repeats on every single transaction.

A Short Glossary for Paying Chinese Suppliers

Cross-border payment solution refers to a service that lets a foreign buyer fund and settle payments to a China-only platform like 1688 without a local bank account.

Escrow means a platform holds your payment until you confirm the order meets what was agreed, rather than releasing funds to the supplier immediately.

T/T, short for telegraphic transfer, is the industry term for a standard international wire transfer between bank accounts.

Sourcing agent describes a local intermediary who pays a Chinese supplier directly on your behalf, usually for a commission on top of the product cost.

CNH refers to offshore Chinese yuan, the currency many cross-border payment solutions settle in when a Nigerian buyer doesn’t hold a mainland Chinese bank account.

The Bottom Line

There is no single best way to pay Chinese suppliers from Nigeria. Alipay and WeChat Pay work well once a payment is already funded through the right channel.

1688 offers the deepest pricing at the cost of the most setup friction. Made-in-China.com trades some of that pricing for a platform built with international buyers in mind from day one.

What stays constant across all four is the naira side of the transaction. Getting a transparent rate and a reliable way to fund whichever platform you choose matters as much as picking the right one. That’s the specific problem Wiwa was built to solve.
